Kath Bee music

Wet Monday afternoon saw us in the hall for an hour of fantastic children's music from the NZ songwriter Kath Bee.

The children love taking part in Kath's interactive music which has a big focus on fun, co-operation and the wonders of being and 'individual'.

Mathew and Carlo were a great help to Kath!

Week 5

Another great week of learning in Room 1.  Thank you to all the parents who helped us with supervision for the walk to Strickland Community Gardens.  We had such a full but exciting day.
The children observed and learned how the garden had become a focus for a healthy community. Christine (who co-ordinates the work at the gardens), explained to the children that the gardens brought the community together, it gave people the opportunity to volunteer, it provided good exercise for our bodies, growing food helps families to budget and their is a spiritual reward that comes with growing things and sharing with others - a big learning experience.

Christine and the other people working in the garden shared muffins made from apples and rhubarb grown in the gardens, and a glass of grape juice made from last years grape harvest.

When we came back to school the children enjoyed lunch and a play together in the reserve behind school.

On Friday, we planted our own garden in our little space beside our classroom.  We have planted leeks, broccoli and silverbeet. We also planted sage in the school herb garden.

Friday is also Kapa Haka day in the junior syndicate.  The children are learning several waiata/action songs about animals - whales, pigs, owls - in Te Reo. Some of the older boys are demonstrating their skills!

Friday Assembly

Congratulations to the certificate winners this week.

  • Dominic received a certificate at assembly on Friday for working very hard at his school work this week.
  • Daniel received the Sacred Heart Way certificate for being a gentle and kind classmate to everyone in Room 1.
  • Vy received the Duffy Book for 'caught being good'.  Vy always helps tidy our classroom - mostly without having to be asked.

Kelly Sports

Kelly sport activities.

As we explained to parents who attended the 'meet the teacher' gatherings yesterday, we have been lucky to use Kelly Sport coaching to develop the gross motor skills of our children in the junior school.

Today the children had great fun tagging each other while jumping, sideways walking and skipping.

They also did some fun throwing, catching and balancing activities with Steve their coach - whom they just adore!

A new year and a new blog

Welcome to parents, caregivers and children.

I look forward to seeing you at 'meet the teacher' times tomorrow, when the junior school teachers will share with you our aspirations for 2017.
